How to refurbish your lamp post

Prior to starting the process of restoring an existing, reclaimed, or second-hand lamp post you will need to purchase the following:

- Wire Wool
-Red Oxide Primer
-Metal based paint in the colour of your choice
-High quality flat headed paint brush

Reclaimed Lamp Post- Pre-Restoration

Step 1:
Begin by removing any surface rust or flaking paint by gently rubbing the wire woold over the area. If you have concerns about the amount of surface rust, the post can be sent for sandblasting; a process whereby pressurised sand is compressed and then propelled across the surface. This type of removal is used to smooth rough or rusting surfaces.

Step 1a:
In some cases, original lamp posts will require areas to be filled in with metal filler, as additional holes may have been drilled over the years, which are no longer necessary. Once these holes have been filled in, the area should be lightly sanded down by hand.

Step 2:
With the surface area properly prepared, apply the first coat of red oxide primer, taking care to stir the contents thoroughly.  A second coat will then have to be applied after a minimum of 6-7 hours, allowing for the first coat to dry properly.  A topcoat or primer may then be applied after.

Step 3:
With the red oxide now completely dry, you can now apply an even layer of metal-based paint of your colour choice.

Step 4:
Should you wish to re-install the lamp post with wiring, once the refurbished work has been completed, we highly recommend that a tradesperson install the lamp post to the desired area and for an electrician to check the existing wiring or to rewire.

Step 5:
To keep your lamp post looking ‘like-new’, we recommend annual maintenance or as and when required. For more information on how to care and maintain your lamp post, click here.

Here you can see that we coupled this restored lamp post with a copper lantern.  Typically, most lamp posts of this age had a copper lantern but that is completely down to personal preference. See our range of lantern tops by clicking here.
